Welcome to our Practice
Synapse Integrative Wellness is a small center with hand-picked, competent, and caring coaches and practitioners dedicated to provide state-of-the art services to teens, adolescents, young adults, adults, couples and families.
Synapse was a result of a long journey for me. As a teenager, I struggled with a severe eating disorder that occupied 8 years of my life. My greatest love and passion was to become a prima ballerina, and while I did dance professionally my eating disorder took away what I loved most, ballet. I was already tending severe stress fractures to both of my tibias, but I continued to dance as this is what was expected and I was fearful of losing my place in the company and my scholarship, so I kept pushing.
While rehearsing a piece I was asked to lift another dancer that was about 20 lbs heavier. At that time in my life, engulfed by my eating disorder, and my desire to please others, I failed to speak up and say what my intuition was telling me would not be a good idea. So I just did what I was asked, and in that fleeting moment, my entire life as I knew it vanished. I broke my back and I collapsed. Everything I ever wanted and everything that I had worked for, all of the countless hours, weeks, months, and years of sweat, blood and tears, all down the drain. I realized that either I had to get busy dying or busy living, and find another reason to live. So I bowed to recover completely, regain my health, and figure out how to help others struggling so they can re-connect to their authentic selves, re-ignite their passions and go on to live joyful and purposeful lives.
Though I never believed I would be capable of establishing an Eating Disorder Treatment and Wellness Center, life has slowly provided the opportunities to make this a reality. Little by little, each of the staff members at Synapse have been drawn by our mission and purpose and we have created this incredible team, who is passionate and committed about not just helping individuals heal, but also about empowering you to own your story, embrace your uniqueness, connect to your true selves, find your voice and become empowered and purposeful agent in your life! We are committed to creating a transformative experience and not merely treatment.
We believe that wellness is not just the absence of disease but rather the integration of body, mind and spirit in a a peaceful and synergistic union. Why Synapse Integrative Wellness?
A synapse is a structure that permits a neuron (or nerve cell) to pass an electrical or chemical signal to another cell.
They are essential to neuronal function, as synapses are the means by which specialized signals (neurotransmitters) are passed from one cell to another. It is widely accepted that synapses play a role in memory and learning.
When neurotransmitters activate the connection between two neurons via the synaptic cleft, this connection is strengthend when both neurons are active at the same time. The strength of two connected neural pathways is thought to result in the storage of information and enhancement of memory and new learning.
This process of synaptic strengthening is known as long-term potentiation, and neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity is the idea that our brain can change and re-organize itself.
By learning new coping strategies, applying new learning, and continually practicing new patterns of behavior, we are able to re-shape our brains, through the long-term potentiation of our synapses.
Our name is derived from this process, because we believe that long-term change is possible, through continued effort, practice and reinforcement of the thoughts, feelings and behaviors that you want to recreate in your life.
Our Commitment to You is Reflected in our Commitment to Learning.
Integrative Wellness is about seeing you as a WHOLE PERSON rather than just a "disorder" or conglomeration of "issues" or a "diagnosis". We approach our coaching from a strength-based perspective and we see you as WHOLE AND CAPABLE, and that we are simply guides on the side, helping you achieve your goals and enhancing your skillset in being able to achieve those goals.
We also take a wholistic perspective in that we may help you address several aspects of your functioning such as nutrition, supplements, sleep, physical activity, etc and how they all come together to support the goals you are trying to achieve.
We are delighted and honored that you are choosing to work with us and consequently we are constantly striving to learn the most and show up in the best possible way to support you.
